The MERCHANT NAVY is an industry which deals with transporting cargo and
passengers by sea using ships.
Ships can broadly be categorised as:
- Passenger ships – which carry passengers
- Cargo ships – which carries cargo in solid, liquid and gaseous forms
- Specialised ships
Work of seafarers on ships can be categorized into 3 basic departments:
- Deck / Navigation department
- Engine Department
- Catering / Saloon Department
Responsibilities of the Deck Department:
- Taking the ship from one port to another port i.e. navigation.
- Loading and unloading of cargo / Embarking and disembarking of passengers
Responsibilities of the Engine Department:
- Keeping a watch on the running machineries
- Maintenance of all machineries on board the ship
Responsibilities of the Saloon / Catering Department:
- Providing food to all people on board the ship
- Housekeeping of the accommodation area
Advantages of joining the Merchant Navy:
- Learn to take the responsibility of cargo and human life at a very young age

- 4 – 6 months of paid annual leave as you become a senior officer
- Family carriage allowed to senior officers as well

Disadvantages of joining the Merchant Navy:
- Regarded as the 10th most dangerous profession in the world. Formula One car
racing being the most dangerous.
- Long period of stay away from family
- Some people may suffer from sea sickness
- You may not get the food of your choice always as you work together with
people from different countries
- Working hours can be long and physically demanding

Candidates should have Passed 10th standard from a recognized educational board with Science and Mathematics as subjects. The marks obtained should be 40% in overall and 40 % in English language alone. Should qualify a Common Entrance Test (CET) conducted by the Board of Examination for Seafarers (BES) for admission with effect from January 2012 Batch. Age: Not more than 25 years at the time of commencement of the course.

You may join the Merchant Navy after Class X, Class XII, BA, BCom, Bsc, Diploma or
Merchant Navy and after passing licensing examinations once they have completed the
requisite sea service, will be at par with students who had joined the Merchant Navy
from science / engineering background.
